An Integral Part of Management!

Employee motivation determines productivity in a business or organization.

Demotivated employees will work less, avoid taking risks or accepting challenges, arrive late or miss work, and focus on anything except achieving company goals.

Motivated employees, on the other hand, strive to learn new things, contribute new ideas, work extra hard, and are innovative and disciplined.

As a manager or business owner, employee motivation should therefore be a top priority when it comes to running your organization as it directly affects the growth and sustainability of a company.

Employee motivation is directly linked to the management process and, depending on your management style, you can make or break your employees. Employee motivation should be considered as an integral part of the management process and here is how to go about it.

Employees are human beings who have had a long-life exposure to authority. This starts as kids where we are molded by our parents, teachers, religious leaders and government officials. It means that we are hardwired to admire and follow the people ahead of us, whether spiritually, professionally or academically. In this respect, as a manager, you need to consider your actions, especially towards your employees, and lead by example.

If you are a decent manager, your employees will be decent. If you are disrespectful and allow your temper to overrule you, your employees will follow suit. You therefore want to lead by example, starting with the basics such as coming to work early. When dealing with employees, treat them like adults, be polite and empathic. Employees generally follow what their managers do even if they do not realise it. For instance, if you procrastinate a lot or lie about issues in the office, your employees will automatically find it acceptable to follow your example and lie and procrastinate themselves.

Employees are motivated differently

A fat pay check, paid vacations, and numerous office parties don’t always work for everyone. In this respect, the management must understand every employee and what motivates them. Some people are looking for health benefits, retirement benefits, paid leave days or the opportunity to work from home. To others, all of these might not count if they aren’t using the latest technology in their field of work. Some employees want to be mentioned at the end of the year party while others want exceptional titles: it’s all for you to figure out.

The bottom line is each employee has their interests, but they all want to feel respected and valued. In fact, most employees want to feel that you are genuinely interested in their skills and personality. To show that you care about them, you have to get close to them, have a one-on-one conversation and understand what motivates them.

For instance, some employees might feel demotivated if some of the tasks they are given are slightly out of line with their profession. As a good manager, all you need to do is figure out how to find the best-suited tasks for their skill set.

Fuse company goals with employee goals

To get the best out of your employees, you need to show them how their role in the organization enhances its vision. Make employees understand that what they do helps the company grow, and at the same time enhances their career. For instance, if you want to motivate a marketer, you could explain to them why you need to conquer a defined geographic region in order to move onto the next one. In this case, it shows the employee that you are thinking about increasing the opportunities to work with a broader audience.

For a manager to get it right, strategic planning is required right from the start. The top management will need to be involved in the talent acquisition process to ensure that the job description they put out there can evolve together with the company. Ideally, you want your employees to know that as the company grows, their career grows as well.

Use a favorable management system

A favorable management system ensures your employees feel valued and respected. It means putting in place various measures that ensure clear communication, fair compensation, a reward system and incentives among others. Employees are human beings and will automatically react to unfairness in an organization especially from managers. Once employees realize that they are being compensated less than their counterparts, they will probably work less and start showing symptoms of being demotivated.

Employee motivation heavily relies on the management systems put in place, and that’s why they are an integral part of the management process. Employees are your most valued resource, and you should, therefore, give them the treatment they deserve so that you can get the best out of them. Poor management leads to employee demotivation and eventually reduced customer satisfaction. Without customers, you risk losses and a bad reputation.

The management, in general, is responsible for employee motivation since they understand how the business runs, the profits are made, and how to mobilize resources. In this regard, managers have to put in place strategic measures that ensure employees are motivated. Employee motivation involves strategic decision-making from the key players because a wide range of responsibilities are involved, such as budgeting, building a productive company culture, and mobilizing resources to ensure consistency across all areas.

In the end, as a business owner, you don’t want to leave all the work to just one department such as the human resource department. All manager need to be involved wholeheartedly in employee motivation.
